TOXICOLOGY PROGRAM OVERVIEW

       The Duke Toxicology Program provides toxicological assessments of consumer and commercial products necessary to comply with federal and state laws concerning labeling and worker hazard communication. The Toxicology Staff also supports OEM Consulting by providing risk assessments necessary for determining work or environmental-relatedness of disease. The professional staff of the Toxicology Program consists of four toxicologists who are either board certified or board eligible in occupational medicine or toxicology. The Duke Toxicology Program maintains a database on over 1000 toxic chemicals that is used to provide risk assessments necessary for its various products and services. This expert risk assessment and database management system allows the Toxicology Program to conduct cost effective evaluations of complex products. Specific services offered by the Toxicology Program include:

The Duke Toxicology Program provides services to over 400 companies, domestic and international, including The Art and Creative Materials Institute and the Writing Instrument Makers Association and their members. These trade associations represent companies that import or produce over 80% of children’s and fine art materials sold in the United States. The Duke Toxicology Program has evaluated over 40,000 commercial and consumer products for hazard labeling requirements under state, federal and international laws. The Duke staff is able to leverage the expertise of its toxicologists through the use of state of the art expert database management systems. These systems allow them to assure that risk assessments on all products remain current with the most up to date scientific knowledge.
